5-Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

5-minute-mug-cake

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible?

To make a cake in a microwave oven? With the whole process taking only about 5 minutes of your precious time?

Then I have the answer for you.

IT. IS. POSSIBLE. And it is even GOOD AND TASTY!

The truth is that I was searching for a decent mug cake recipe for quite some time. I had collected a few recipes, read through the comments, contemplated the variations of ingredients, and waited for the right moment to make this tempting chocolate dream come true.

Without even waiting that long, the right moment presented itself this week…  because when you return from a visit to your sister’s and your sister sends you home with a big smile and a suitcase full of Twilight Saga books, then some really special measures need to be taken, the most important one being to save time wherever possible – cleaning, sleeping, and even baking included.

So here I am, with 3 and a half books to read and a lovely new cake to show you.

Here are the details…

5-minute-chocolate-mug-cake-ingredients

This is what we need. Just enough for 1 1/2-cup (300 ml) mug.

5-minute-microwave-mug-cake-batter-in-a-bowl

This recipe includes very few instructions.

You just basically place all the ingredients (minus the choc chips) in a mug (I did the stirring in a bowl because I wanted to keep my mug clean and nice for photographic purposes).

Then you stir it all until well combined.

The batter in a mug.

Then you sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top of your batter.

And bake it in your microwave oven for 3 1/2 minutes on maximum power.

Sooo easy.

While baking, the cake first puffs up, it may even overflow a little, and then it deflates.

The result is flavorful and moist. Actually, it tastes just like a proper chocolate cake, I must say.

See? I was totally not joking. My life is now ruled by vampires. What a sweet life I am having, I know, I know.

With lots of love,

Petra

(This recipe makes 1 1.5-cup (300 ml) mug.)

I love making these. I like to top mine with toffee chips. I have one nephew who can’t tolerate milk or eggs, but he hates to be singled out from the family with something different. With this, everyone gets their own. And it’s our little secret that I use egg substitute in his!

Hi Lanina! I am glad you like it!

To make it in the oven, here are my suggestions: I would triple the ingredients, I would pour the batter into a greased and floured cake pan (or springform pan) and bake it until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. Then I would remove it from the oven, let it cool, and THEN I would spread some generous amount of Nutella over the top. What do you think? Will you give it a try?

Also, I wouldn’t use regular mugs for the oven. But ramekins could be all right.

      Love,

      Petra 🙂

Actually my one feels like a tempur-mattress, when you put the spoon in. But it tastes very very good!

We had much fun letting the spoon jump on the top! *hahahah*

cake was delicious, after i didn’t burn it. made double mix, put cocoa only in 2nd mug, vanilla one burnt because 3.15 was way too long! but i fixed it and put the choc one in for 1 min and turned out perfectly! maybe nz has high powered microwaves? 🙂

I had the same problem. I think the Universe was telling me not to eat yummy things tonight. First I made milo with soy milk. and although I love soy milk in my coffee, with milo it just wasn’t working (its a chocolate drink for anyone who hasn’t heard of Milo). Then I made this, put all the ingredients in my bowl and as if there was a tiny person living in my baking cupboard (located above my head, doors wide open) my sago flour jar flew out of the cupboard, narrowly missed my head, bounced off the bench and landed on the floor coating my entire kitchen in flower!!! Ugh.

IT GETS WORSE – Then, after I had cleaned up the glass ridden flour mess, I mixed up my batter, put it in the microwave, not even considering that I should check half way through, and it came out a solid chunk of rubber, I couldn’t even pierce it with my spoon. I had to violently stab it to open it up only to find that it was burned from the inside out.

It smelled amazing, and I will try it again. The comedy of craziness was enough for me to quit while I was ahead, and I had a small bowl of berry basket yogurt instead.

      I had to share. xx

this is an amazing recipe, but i found it kind of hard to eat. like, a rubbery texture. but it was moist at the same time. i found it hard to stick my fork into it. like, it just pressed down, didnt pierce it. is that normal?

ooh, this is a great idea for a girly get together! my daughter’s having friends over next week, i think they’d enjoy each making her own cake. and then drizzle cold cream on top…mmmm.

Meagan, your adventure made me laugh – looks like God dropped a very thinly veiled hint there: EAT HEALTHY! Good for you, that yogurt sounds yummy too. 🙂

  27. 27
    S says:

ok, so as i wrote above, my daughter n her friends made this yesterday. we made 3 in total, and each one was absolutely awful. i even tried adjusting cooking times, ingredients etc. based on the first disaster, to try n salvage the other two, but each one was an unbreakable, dry, springy sponge with no flavour. i even melted tons of chocolate and drenched these cakes in it, in the hope that it would help the girls swallow the trampolines-in-a-mug, but nope – none of the kids could endure them. i have been baking for more than 20 years now, so i know this is not down to any mistake on my part. so many fab ingredients – oh my cooking chocolate!!! – all went into the bin. while the idea is great, the outcome is AWFUL. my advice – dont bother.

I got a similar recipe from Livewith Kelly this AM (3-1-12) and it turned out wonderfully….but the ingredients and amounts were different. 4 T. flour, 3 T. sugar and 1 and a half T. cocoa stirred together in a mug. Add 1 egg, 3 T. milk, 3 T. oil and a few drops vanilla. Stir together and bake in microwave oven for 3 minutes on full power. (Mine is 1100 watts) We put Cool-Whip on top.
    Loved it!!!

Do you know if you put an ice cold (like straight from freezer) chocolate (i find lindor choc works best) in the middle of the mixture (dont push it down) right before you put the cup into the microwave you will get molten-lava-cake-in-a-cup-from-the-microwave? 🙂 try it someday!! XD

My first try was also like rubber and did not taste very well, but this time i gave it way less time in the microwave ( 900W- 1 1/2 min aprx) and now it tastes a lot different. What I don’t like about these recipes for microwaves is that people forget to mention how many W to use. Maximum on one microwave might not be the maximum on another one.

I was very excited to try this recipe but it came out rubbery and dry with hardly any chocolate flavor!!! I was very disappointed 🙁 anything that I might have done wrong or could do differently next time? it is such a good idea, but mine turned out horribly.

I want to try this. In fact, I’m going to try it tomorrow. However, I don’t have baking powder on hand. Only baking soda. Could I use that instead? Also I don’t have cocoa either. Could I substitute that with hot chocolate powder (the ones in the Swiss Miss packet)?

Hi! This looks easy but one question – can I use a regular microwave because mine is a very basic machine which is not able to bake or grill.

    • 51.1
      Petra says:

Hi Jean! Yes, I think you can try that, I have done that before as well. Just make sure that your dish is heatproof and you will need to bake your cake a little longer as well (when you’ll think it’s just about right, insert a wooden skewer in the center – it should come out clean). Enjoy! 🙂
