Detox Smoothie

detox smoothie recipe with step by step picture tutorial

Yep, that’s a healthy green smoothie?

I realize things like these are rather scarce over here, at this little place of mine.

But before you start wondering whether I’ve overcome a head injury recently, let me explain what’s going on…

I made this smoothie yesterday. That allowed me to tick off my first New Year’s resolution – to bring a little more health into my life.

Then I did three (3) sit-ups.

I was feeling amazing.

A new person was born.

Today I made a batch of cookies and had two glasses of wine.

So everything is back to normal.

The new person has grown up rather quickly, it seems.

Still I wonder what made me feel better, the alkalizing smoothie or the lovely wine.

Need to think it all through.

  1. You are in doubt??!!! It’s ALL good!
Cookies & smoothie…w/a wine chaser to unite them all in bliss…now THAT’s brunch!
    🙂 M&M

  2. ha… you are such fun! But, please tell me. Does the smoothie taste good? Does the lemon and pineapple juice help it go down easily? I’d be willing to give it a try if it is good 🙂

SO nice visiting with you! Happy weekend!

    • …yes, it tastes good. If you tolerate the taste of fresh ginger, it does. And exactly as you’ve said, the lemon and pineapple are the main flavors, so it’s nice. If you find it too sweet, you may want to add some water. Enjoy your detox and have a wonderful weekend too! 🙂 Petra

  3. I’ve seen quite a few recipes that call for spinach in smoothies and while I’ve never tried it, it mustn’t taste too bad if it’s so common. I must gather the courage and try this sometime!

    • I HATE spinach, but I eat it every day! I put fresh baby spinach (like 2 handfuls!), a few large scoops of peach yogurt, a full pear, and a banana and blend it up. It gives you a serving or 2 of dairy, fruit, and veggies plus it tastes sooooo good! Add a little flax and it’s incredible! Don’t be afraid of the spinach, it won’t bite 😉

    • It’s not bad at all. I make a smoothie with a cup of non fat greek yogurt, 1 cup of blueberries (or raspberries, blackberries, strawberries), about 1/2 cup of orange juice and a big handful of baby spinach. It blends right in and you don’t even know it’s there! Soooooo good and good for you!

  4. So random – I went to the grocery store tonight and bought fresh spinach because I heard it is a great addition in smoothies. I wasn’t really sure how it would taste, or if it would even work… Then I logged onto Tastespotting and saw your picture. It was like fate. Now I know how to make a great spinach smoothie 🙂

  5. This photo looks amazing .. I love all the ingredients you added… spinach .. ginger .. lemon .. have to try how it taste when you mix them in a smoothie 🙂

  6. I just made this for my boyfriend and I, and although we both loved it, I felt it was missing something. So, before I finished my smoothie, I added a capful of white Caribbean rum. It stopped seeming like it was missing something and became even more awesome!

My boyfriend still feels it was AMAZING and is “reaping the health benefits”.

But I feel good, good for the vitamins and good for the rum.

Clearly I have an issue with alcohol free drinks….

    😛 xxxxxx

  7. I stumbled here by accident but I think its a good one:) Love your site Thanks for sharing such wonderful recipes:)

  8. That looks beautiful – I can’t wait to try it! And to calm anyone’s worries about spinach in smoothies: A while ago I had bought a ton of broccoli rabe and was trying to get rid of it before it went bad. One of the strategies was blending it into smoothies. As long as I used lots of flavorful stuff in it (bananas and frozen mangoes are awesome!) you couldn’t really taste it at all, and believe me, spinach is a lot more bland than broccoli rabe. 🙂 Good luck!

  9. Just tried this smoothie today. Shared it with my husband and 17 year old son. We all really liked the interesting flavors. Its a good one!

  10. Can you drink it everyday? Or what do you recommend? I drank it for the third day in a row and did not feel good. Thanks!

  11. Just tried this smoothie. Eyed the ingredients, put in extra ginger (I know it has a lot of health benefits so I figured better to go with a heavy hand). Even though I hate ginger, this smoothie is excellent! Tastes fantastic. Very unique taste. Hope it makes me feel fantastic. Thanks a lot for the idea!

    Happy health to you all

  12. I just found you on pinterest with this smoothie. I will have to try it, because I have only been doing smoothies with fruit and yogurt. I could use a few more veggies.. Also LOVE that you have real goodies here also… I am a new fan…

  14. What are the health benefits of this smoothie? I really like the taste but am not seeing any health benefits. Am I missing something?

  15. Made this today and drank the whole thing! This is huge for me, I’m not a big green veggie eater and the idea of a green smoothie freaks me out mentally. I thought it was delicious!! Thanks for the recipe!

  16. Petra,

Bet you could substitute 1/2 a ripe avocado for the spinach and have another variation on this smoothie.

Pic looks good enough to drink! LOL

I’m a big smoothie person and have tried all kinds of combos.

Will add this one to my list!

  17. FABULOUS! I made some for my hubby and I…didn’t have enough pineapple juice, so mixed in a little apple juice with it. The ginger is what makes it zing! Thanks for sharing….we both love it!

  18. Awesome! Just made this, and will be trying different versions, but love that i can put spinach in a smoothie. Thanks so much for the recipe!

  19. Just discovered your site via Pinterest … love it! Your crochet, recipes & wit are wonderful! I look forward to trying this smoothie! It reminds me of the apple/pear/kale/lemon juice I made recently … my first time juicing with greens & we loved it. Amazing how the sweet tang of certain fruits dominates greens just right. I even added a teaspoon for healthy flaxseed oil & we couldn’t taste it (thank God). Cannot wait to enjoy your smoothie … I know it will be a hit as well! 😉

  20. … oops! I meant to type “of healthy flaxseed oil”. Sigh … I just remembered the fresh pineapple in my fridge that I cut up over a week ago … ugh … hate it when that happens! But, you also reminded me of the bottle of red wine in the fridge … glass for tonight & the rest for cooking lamb for dinner tomorrow. 😉 Thank you (notice I ignored your reminder to do sit-ups … LOL!).

  21. Made this this morning according to the recipe, but also added some frozen pineapple chunks just to try and thicken it up a little bit. I actually liked that this was a thinner smoothie….almost a frothy juice. I get tired of really thick, heavy smoothies that I can only drink about 1/3 of. This was SO YUMMY!! It tasted of pineapple and lemon with just a hint of ginger “zing” (and I usually hate fresh ginger!). Really delicious!

    • Hi Leah! I would not say so… unless you are on a diet and would like to have this shake instead of a snack. 🙂 Petra

  23. Hi, I love the taste but what doe the actual pineapple juice do, isn’t it loaded with sugar? Would it be better to have juice from concentrate or not from concentrate? And last, I it better to use fresh or canned pineapples?

  24. The idea that this “alkalizes” your “system” demonstrates a humorous ignorance of biology and its chemical underpinnings – but if you enjoy it and the placebo effect inspires you to get some exercise, then rock on.

  26. Dayton, Lemon does alkalize the body, it may sound backward but its true, google it. I don’t understand why you have to be so rude, there is no reason to call someone ignorant. Especially since you don’t have the facts straight.

    • Yeah, detox – somewhat… Cleanses nothing really, but it’s better than what a lot of people shove in their stomach for breakfast. Just google a cleansing detox smoothie! You’ll get lots of ideas, & you can always tweak it as you please. Just remember what your trying to do… cleanse – detox or smoothie…. just sayin’ not a lot of people can do a real cleanse, cause it’s 3 per day for a couple of days, w/ only water, tea – plain – no sugar or milk, & a chicken broth. Now that’s a cleanse.

  27. I’m going to try this smoothie first thing in the morning. Headed for the grocery store once my son gets out of school. Will you be posting any more smoothie recipes? I would like to try a recipe with sweet potato, or watermelon/honey dew flavors.

  28. Petra, I love your blog. I have made the garlic knots, and now the detox smoothie. I made some improvements to it – added parsley, mint, fresh pineapple, fresh grapefruit and dry ginger. Delicious! Even my 4 year old kid liked it 🙂

  29. This is an alkaline drink, and does help alkaline the body. Used together with other alkaline foods, it will improve your health because it does reduce the acid in your system.

  34. Sure, these foods effect the pH in your STOMACH, but you can’t possibly believe that it does much else. And just like having too low of a pH in your stomach is bad, having too high (or alkaline) has possibly worse effects. Your stomach acid is there to kill a lot of the bacteria that you ingest, because there is a lot of it. That acid filters out and kills most of that stuff, so as you raise the pH you also let more stuff in. There’s always a chance you could get some nasty illness that you could’ve prevented otherwise. Just eat a good variety of foods and you’re golden.
