Magical Folk Art & Crafts Fair

bobbin lace making

Art and crafts have always been a great love of mine.

A few days ago, I was very lucky to visit a fair dedicated to the traditional folk art and crafts of my native country – Slovakia.

The whole experience was just magical. That is probably the best word I can use to describe the feelings I had when I was watching a selection of very old crafts being demonstrated by the most skillful craftsmen right there in front of my eyes. They are the crafts that helped my ancestors live better and nicer lives. And the best thing is that those traditions are still alive.

I am very thankful to the kind people who came to demonstrate their skills in front of curious people like me and I am also thankful to the people who want to keep the old traditions alive and organize this great festival. It was an amazing, sentimental and important touch with the wisdom of the past. Just have look…

It’s lovely to see all these crafts still going strong. My father was a woodcarver in his spare time and my mother liked doing embroidery … but bobbin lace is the one that fascinates me. Would love to try it one day!

I like herding stick making and blacksmithing most, especially the one where the pretty lady sells the products. Good crafts need good advertisement, too. 🙂

How wonderful to see all these traditional arts and crafts being kept alive by talented craftsmen and women. I just love the bobbin lace and the sculpted horses, especially the rocking horse! The traditional dress worn by the artists is so lovely. I have a wooden spoon with a heart carving like the ones shown above. Maybe it was made in your country?

Amazing fair. I love this staff. Easter eggs are beautiful, wish I could do like these in me Art&craft club with students. I like all your photos, thank you for putting them up so we can feel the atmosphere. Lovely. There used to be art & craft fair in Italy, in Soveria when we go for holiday but they stopped doing for past few years, I hope it would return.
